The saying goes… “something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue…”
When Rachel Jacoby Zoldan, 29 and a New York City-based freelance writer, married her husband Ben two years ago, she was so focused on details like finalizing her seating chart and guest transportation that she admits she forgot about incorporating her something blue into the day.
“I had my something new — my dress — something old, a piece of my Gammy’s wedding gown as my bouquet tie, and for borrowed, my mother’s clutch,” she says. “So Kleinfeld’s stitched a silk blue ribbon with the word “LOVE” embroidered in it into my hem. It was simple and beautiful and didn’t detract from the champagne and blush palette of my gown.”
While Rachel took a rather traditional route, other brides are opting to incorporate the color outside the dress.
Mary Thornton, an event planner and owner of Party Party in Fairfield, CT, says her brides have opted for a sprinkling of blue flowers — including delphiniums and forget me nots — in their bouquets, while others have carried a blue hanky with their new monogram. “The beauty of this idea is they can frame it later with their invitation or a photo from their wedding day,” she says.
Other brides are using the color to accessorize.
“Accessorizing with blue accents is a modern way to incorporate that something blue into your day,” says Lyndsey Hamilton, creative director, LH Events. “Try a bold blue pump or aquamarine drop earrings. Bolder brides may go the beauty route with cobalt eyeshadow or a baby blue manicure.”
Another place to use a shot of blue?
“In the grooms’ boutonnieres,” says Thornton. “A sprig of purply-blue hydrangea contrasts nicely with a navy blue suit, while a white rose or mini calla lily accented with a blue ribbon in a shade that complements the bridal party’s color scheme.”
