During the winter when the flowers are sleeping, Carolina Herrera is in bloom. The Fall 2019 collection brings a garden of color that enlivens even the grayest of days. Just as the Carolina Herrera woman transforms her settings with vibrant sophistication, the collection brings bold brushstrokes of color to a February morning inside of the New-York Historical Society.
Informed by the minimal-maximal drama of photographer Robert Mapplethorpe’s floral still lifes, and dancing to the sounds of Grace Jones, the collection exudes the regal presence of a bold spirit. Models Sarah Brown and Sora Choi open the show with extreme proportions in confident hues of Taxi Cab Yellow and playful-refined floral prints designed in-house.
Creative director Wes Gordon’s elegant interpretation of flora brings grand silhouettes that move with the ease and understanding that the Herrera woman is no shrinking violet. There were bursts of azure on taffeta, nectarine mixed with currant, and flamingo pink for she who dares to dress boldly. For those wanting just a wink of color, Gordon presented tuxedo pants with a flamingo faille sash. And, to complete the look, the House collaborated with CH Carolina Herrera for a limited-edition, two-toned exotic Scala Insignia. Closing the show was a white oversized shirt gown with ruffled detail, both an homage to Mrs. Herrera’s signature crisp, white shirt, and a nod to Mrs. Herrera’s first show that closed with a wedding gown.
When considering his woman, Gordon again looked back to a young Mrs. Herrera, a woman who lives boldly, laughs with her head thrown back, and isn’t afraid to stand out in the crowd.
